The Facts

  • KCL Management has stated that the college needs a 6% surplus to invest in buildings and facilities.  Tuition fees are not sufficient to cover this and capital funding is no longer state-funded.

  • To help achieve this, KCL Management have decided to make up to 15% of staff redundant at three Health Schools (Medicine, Biomedical Science and Institute of Psychiatry) - the aim is to cut 10% of the academic pay roll.

  • This equates to up to 120 redundancies out of 777 positions.

  • UPDATE: We have been informed (04/07/14) that under 60 staff are now provisionally at risk.

  • Reductionist metrics concerning research income and teaching hours were used to determine whose jobs will be at-risk.  Teaching or research quality, student assistance and supervision of research students, for example, were not taken into account. At-risk staff must incorporate all relevant information into the 2 page document to defend their jobs.

  • The consultation period began on 12th May.  Students did not receive any official communications from KCL Management before or after this date.

  • Students were not consulted about these proposals before their publication.  This is despite a promise from KCL Management in 2013 that students would be consulted prior to decisions concerning restructuring of the health schools.

  • Consultation since has been solely about informing students, and making contingency plans - we do not consider this consultation. There has been no consultation on alternative strategies.

  • The bare legal minimum of 45 days’ consultation has been provided for these proposals to be discussed by all concerned.  This time includes student examination and vacation periods.

  • Formal notices of dismissal are due to be issued in mid-August, giving precious little time for students and departments to establish how they will manage without certain members of staff and their expertise.

  • At the Institute of Psychiatry, all the heads of departments and many senior figures have spoken out about the damage this will do. The Post-Doc network have also openly stated their opposal to these plans. Various departments have expressed motions of no confidence in KCL senior management.

  • On the 25th June, UCU announced that the majority of their members had voted for strike action. This is planned for the 10th July.
